Mid-term seminar in South Africa: weltwärts 2022

Lola Krahpol - volunteer in Cape Town

At the beginning of May, the interim seminar of the weltwärts volunteers took place in South Africa. A volunteer in Cape Town shares her experiences.

Arriving in Gqeberha

On Monday, we all arrived at the guesthouse, were divided into rooms, welcomed by Thomas and Jonas and presented the program for the next days. Afterwards we took a walk through a valley and talked about our challenges and the strategies we used to overcome them. In the evening we had breait at our house and later sat around the campfire.

On Tuesday we went to Masifunde and talked about our status quo. We did this with a so called “status wheel”, where we could write down how we are doing in the areas of accommodation, place of work, activity, social life, security, well-being and confidence related to the donation circle. In the evening we went out for dinner. We got to know people who have set up a “food truck project” and are currently making a stopover at Masifunde on their way to Cape Town.

Reflection and future

Wednesday was the most intense, beautiful and exciting day so far. We went to the beach and then went for a hike where we talked about Tuesday’s topics in more depth. The hike ended at a campsite by the ocean where we swam in the Rock Pool and had a barbecue. The evening was relaxed, eating lasagna and then chatting and playing cards.

On Thursday we were again at Masifunde and Jonas. There Thomas, as well as a guest from the ZFD from Palestine presented their NGOs. In the afternoon we were allowed to bombard them with critical questions about their development work. In the evening we sat together for a long time and talked and played…

At the end we talked about the future, the planning of the next months. This includes what we still want to do and how we want to spend the rest of the time.

I look forward to the upcoming months!
