We support COPESSA! – Update and donation report

projects during Christmas time

Christmas 2020, a Christmas like we have never experienced before. Even though it was very different from usual and we were certainly not the only ones who missed the family gatherings, we still have some very good news about our special fundraising campaign for COPESSA that took place during Advent.

Our partner organisation COPESSA has run into financial difficulties due to the Corona crisis. A group of ten former COPESSA volunteers sent to South Africa by SAGE Net have come together to support COPESSA during this difficult time.

successful fundraising

Our fundraising and calendar campaign raised almost €4,000 for COPESSA. With this financial support, the parks that COPESSA created a few years ago and has been maintaining ever since, could be restored. Since the beginning of the Corona crisis and the devastating economic effects on the population in Soweto, which has always been poor, many homeless and unemployed youths had spread out in the park and destroyed much of what COPESSA had lovingly built up through their vandalism. We admire the intransigence of the people of Protea Glen and COPESSA for not giving up despite all these setbacks and for continuing to fight for a safe environment in Soweto, and we are glad that with your support we have been able to contribute financially to ensuring that the people of Soweto can continue to live safely in the future.

Preparing for another lockdown

With the spread of the even more contagious Corona virus mutation in South Africa, COPESSA had to prepare for another lockdown. In order to be able to continue supporting victims of domestic violence, two mobile phones and data volume were procured. This way, the social workers can continue to treat victims and accompany them on their path of mental and physical healing.

Another part was used to settle outstanding salary payments and liabilities. Many COPESSA staff have been working without pay since the beginning of the Corona crisis last year. Organisations like COPESSA do not function without voluntary work, which demands a lot of energy and time. We are glad that these important employees have continued their work at COPESSA and are even more pleased to be able to make their own livelihoods a little easier with our donations.

We say THANK YOU!

The ordered calendars were sold much faster than we had imagined at the beginning of the campaign. Part of the proceeds went to us as SAGE Net e.V. and thus to the cultural cooperation between South Africa and Germany. The other part was donated to COPESSA.

A big thank you goes to everyone who supported COPESSA with a donation or by buying a calendar.
